Weekly Seminar Series on

Scientific Publications

 (5 credits)

General information

  • Do you have a stack of articles "to be read when I have time" that is gathering dust?

  • Did you read a study and are now wondering whether you truly grasped all concepts?

  • Do you find yourself with more questions than answers after going through a study?

  • Did you come across an exciting study that you’re eager to share?

The Journal Club seminars are held weekly at Uppsala BioCenter, with the option to attend remotely via Zoom. The seminars were originally designed for PhD students but are  open to researchers at all stages. Whether you're a bachelor’s student, a professor emeritus, or anywhere in between, feel free to join!

Pursuing a PhD is a massive undertaking, and finding enough time to reflect on ideas from different angles can be challenging. The seminars foster students' engagement with scientific literature in their research topics and beyond. It is an informal but still structured and consistent environment for scientific discussions, a gentle push to allocate time for reading and discussion and a great opportunity to get input from fellow participants.

Participants are encouraged to attend the seminar events that best fit their schedules. We understand that everyone is busy, if such discussions/presentations enrich your thinking - make the seminar your habit and join whenever you have the time. We truly value everyone's input and  the diversity of topics that we all bring to the discussions.

Syllabus

The seminars take place weekly at Uppsala BioCenter, with the option to attend remotely via Zoom. Each seminar focuses on a single study, which will be presented and discussed by students. Participants will have the opportunity to regularly present articles of their choice. Additionally, students can present their own manuscripts or revisions and rehearse their yearly update seminars. Presentations should follow the suggested format (presentation template provided), which includes: •Situating the study within a broader research context. •Providing background on the research group, main authors' affiliations, and information on the journal and its editors. •Analyzing key findings, offering critical evaluations of the data quality, and considering the interpretations made in the study. Active participation in discussions during or after the presentation is encouraged. Objective The goal of the seminar series is to offer students a regular opportunity to review scientific literature relevant to their research fields, while also providing a platform to explore other research areas represented by fellow attendees. Participating students will develop skills to: •Comprehend scientific literature and distill complex concepts into simplified terms. •Place selected studies within a broader research context. •Analyze articles from the perspective of their own research interests and draw informed conclusions from the available data. •Gain familiarity with research groups working on relevant topics, the affiliations of authors, and the journals publishing the articles. Credits A student receives 0.125 credits for attending a seminar and 0.25 credits for presenting an article at a seminar. In total each student can receive up to 5 credits. Prerequisites This seminar series is primarily intended for PhD students, but is open to all interested researchers. Attendance is available either in person or remotely via Zoom.
